Video Lecture: Barriers

It's human nature that the greater are the barriers standing in in our way, the greater is our desire to reach our goals. Find out how with an emuna perspective you won't even see the barriers but rather you'll see G-d "hiding" within them...

Today's Live Broadcast: Perfect Counsel

The only advice that is infallible and will endure cannot be drawn from anything in this world. With regard to all kinds of practical guidance we must reach beyond this created world to the most profound Source and look to the ultimate purpose of things. Only then will we know with wholeness and certainty what to do in every situation.

G-d Willing we'll be broadcasting today's lesson live from the Chut Shel Chesed Yeshiva in Jerusalem at 5:00 PM Israel time. The broadcast, as well as my lessons posted are Mac and iPod compatible.

G-d willing, we'll post a link to the broadcast for all those who couldn't see it live by 12:01 AM  Sunday (Israel time). If you can't see the broadcast, you might need to download a new version of Flash Media player, which you can do here. From the Mafia to Uman

Whenever I go to Rebbe Nachman's holy grave site in Uman, I always marvel at how many Jewish souls of all types end up making the difficult journey to be together with Rabbi Nachman on the Day of Judgment.

Last year Rabbi Shalom Arush was standing in line at the mikvah (the ritual bath) at Uman, and there was a huge mountain of a man standing directly in front of him. Rabbi Arush couldn’t help notice that the man’s entire body was covered with thick terrible looking scars. The man felt the Rabbi’s eyes upon him so he turned around and asked:

“What do you think you’re staring at Rabbi?”

Quickly looking away, Rabbi Arush said: “I’m so sorry, please forgive me!”

The man said: “Are you interested in why I look like this. Do you really want to know how my body became soscarred?

Then he told Rabbi Shalom Arush this amazing tale…

"Lost" and Found

My Yosef Binyomin Dovid was labeled pervasive developmentally disabled more than 20 years ago. He has always needed 24 hour one-on-one supervision and rarely interacts socially without constant prompting.

Rebbe Noson of Breslev writes: "even while the gates are closed and locked on every side and in every corner ~ so that one might mistakenly have thought that there was no hope, G-d forbid ~ I still believe that there remains plenty of hope! For G-d's capacity to send relief and deliverance is very great, indeed, and His power of salvation is inexhaustible!"

Last night Yosef Binyomin Dovid disappeared. This never happened before. We searched and searched to no avail. Finally, in desparation, my son and daughter ran across the street and looked in the small synagogue there. Sure enough, there was Yosef Binyomin Dovid -  sitting with a chumash (Bible) - learning.

People who know my son were in the synagogue at the time. They were transfixed in amazement as they watched him sitting still and reading the chumash from the beginning - word by word, carefully pronouncing each word correctly. I too stood in amazement watching him for several minutes. He was so completely immersed in reading that he didn't even realize that I was there.

Such is the power of prayer and the Jewish Festivals. Such is one small example of  G-d's kindnesses and His compassion which never ends. May we see more miracles in accordance with His will.

No Worries!

Yesterday I took a Chol Hamoed trip with my family to the Ne'emah farm in Ofakim (in southern Israel, close to Gaza) that keeps the Sabbatical year laws. Just like Jews rest on Shabbat, the Torah commands us to let the land of Israel rest and replenish itself every seven years.

The owner of the farm whose name is "Bookie" became religious as a result of an open miracle that happened to him during the Yom Kippur War. He and 47 other soldiers were confronted by 80 Syrian tanks that mysteriously did not fire on them and retreated instead.

The first mitzvah that Bookie took upon himself was to not work his farm at all during the sabbatical year. Now, five seven-year cycles later, Bookie travels the world and speaks about the miracles that have happened to him as result of trusting G-d and not working for a whole year during schmita (the seventh year).

Bookie told us that inevitably his crop is doubled either in the 6th or the 8th year of the cycle to make up for not working during the 7th year. His face shined with excitement as he spoke about all the wonders that G-d has done for him and his family and pointed to his more than double harvest of wheat and barley. There was hardly any rain in Israel this year until the end of March. Bookie told his fellow farmers not to worry, though. At the end of the month there were three days of rain which is all they needed for their crops to grow to full size.

There are 3000 farmers in Israel whose income is solely based on farming and who obey the laws of the sabbatical year (schmita). In the merit of their complete emuna may all of Israel have an abundance of sustenance this year, 5775. Amen.

Every blessing for the new year,
Dr. Zev Ballen
