Micro Moments

With my psychotherapist-eyes, as I look about, I see masses of people walking around who are depressed and unfulfilled. Even the best so-called "functional" people today have a low-grade depression. There are literally millions of us walking around with our souls covered by a filter of sadness and fear and worrying about things, that is blocking our perception of G-d in our lives.

When someone is at the level of a very holy person, he doesn't see anything lacking in the world, or missing in his life. He is genuinely happy all of the time, and he doesn't feel like he is  a slave to this world. The truly righteous people have a perception that they are an integral part of G-d, and that in some way, that 'Divine' part of them called their soul is going to live forever.

They know that this world is temporary, and that sooner or later, all the material things are going to fall apart, because they aren't the "truth,"only G-d is. Holy people like this aren't pulled in, or attracted by, all that shiny falsehood and all those attractive lies. When they see those shiny, attractive things, it's like a toy to them; it doesn't "draw" them, because they've found something that's much more important.

We know that the soul is located in the mind. The mind is what creates the feelings and perceptions we have. When a person is careful about what he thinks, and he forces himself to think good things, then when he's hit with a difficult circumstance or scenario or thought, he has a tool he can use in that moment to carry him through in one piece. We all know vaguely that our brain cells communicate with each other via a system of synapses. The synapse is a small space between the cells, which the information has to "jump" in order to pass to the next stage of the communication process.

That small space gives us a moment, or more accurately, a micro-moment, to choose how we are going to react to a temporary blip or short circuit in our lives. When we get given a test, large or small, we literally have a micro-second to decide whether we are going to go with our emuna programming, to be with G-d, and merge with Him, and merge with His values, or whether we are going to lose it. Most of us still need to do a lot of spiritual prep work to be able to make the right decision when we're faced with that crucial moment...Continue here...

Highs and Lows

We must learn to accept the basic terms of creation that at times we will be up and at times we will be down.

A person who  denies this truth, who desires a life that is always up, is denying the very basis of creation, and in this lies the cause of most of our troubles and disappointments.

The greatest fall that we all have in common is when our souls descended from Heaven to this lowly world. Yet our "decent" to this world is to fulfill a unique and exalted purpose that could not be achieved in any other way.

G-d's presence is hidden in all aspects and on all levels of creation even in our problems because without Him nothing in the world could exist.

This is why G-d spoke to Moses from inside a lowly thorn bush - to show that nothing is devoid of Him, not even a thorn bush.
So too is G-d embedded in all of our obstacles - improper desires, anxiety, depression, marital conflicts, difficulties with children, and other impediments to our emuna. Yet G-d's Light is burning in all of these low places. Nothing can exist without Him.

We must encounter just such a difficulty and at just such a time, yet continue to affirm our faith in G-d and His mercy.

As Rabbi Nachman said: "The truth is that the fall is really not a fall at all."

Rebuilding

There was a fire in the city of Breslev and someone's house burned to the ground. When Rabbi Nossan came upon the scene, he didn't miss an opportunity to teach his students and us a most valuable lesson.

Whispering Soul

Whispering Soul is the latest collection of of my beloved Rabbi and spiritual guide, Rabbi Lazer Brody playing on his native Land-of-Israel flutes with exquisite piano and synthesizer accompaniment by Jeff Horvitch. These melodies are the result of Rabbi Brody's personal prayers while roaming the inspiring Holy-Land countryside.

The first time I listened to these pure and simple melodies I was flooded by tears and an overwhelming desire to return to G-d. My eyes continue to moisten and my heart continues to break every time I hear it's exquisite beauty. It is nothing less than the music of the world-to-come.

Now I'm keeping Rabbi Brody's flute music with me almost all the time, in my study, playing softly in the background even when I'm consulting with people. You too will feel the difference right away. Every compelling note will draw you closer to G-d, to the land of Israel and to your own holy soul.

The Heavenly Colors

When the daughter of Pharaoh came upon the infant, Moses, floating in the Nile she saw that he possessed the all-encompassing goodness that would enable him to always find goodness in every person even the absolutely worst people.

Years later, after the sin of the golden calf, Moses "battled" against G-d by adamantly pointing to the many good aspects of the Jewish people that only he had the strength to see despite their having fallen so deeply into sin.

G-d was so pleased with Moses defense of the children of Israel that He not only forgave us but He rewarded us with the commandment to build a Sanctuary in which G-d could dwell and through which the Jewish people could serve G-d in the wilderness.

That is precisely why G-d commanded each person to "donate" something from his "heart" to the building of the sanctuary; it was because Moses had shown every person his inherent special type of goodness that he possessed in his heart, that those good aspects of every person were aroused and each person brought their special goodness to Moses to use in building the sanctuary. The Sanctuary was built with all of the points of goodness that Moses extracted from the Jewish people.

The materials that the Jewish people donated to the building of the Sanctuary were made from gold, silver, copper, tortoise, deep purple and crimson red. These are called the Heavenly colors which correspond to the mix of many beautiful colors of the Jewish people whose beauty G-d takes special pride in.  The points of goodness of every Jewish person are composed of the colors of Heaven.

Every Jewish person has a holy spark of Moses in his soul. This part of you is capable of seeing the beauty and goodness even in others who have characteristics that don't always please you.

MEDITATIVE EXERCISE

1. Pick one person who you deal with on a regular basis who has personal traits that are difficult for you to endure.

2. Remind yourself that you cannot know what that person has suffered or why they have developed the personal traits that you find irritating or offensive.

3. Now think of yourself as an aspect of Moses and promise yourself that today you will exert yourself as Moses would to find at least one point of colorful goodness in that difficult person.

Your Beloved Dove

The way to G-d is through speech.

You cannot speak to G-d before you recognize G-d's Light in your good deeds, your good characteristics and your good intentions, especially when they are being covered over by layers of darkness, as they often are.

This is what it means in the Song of Songs when it says; "My beloved Dove (the Light of your goodness) is trapped and hidden in the rocks ( the dark places)."

Your beloved Dove is the part of you that is completely 100% pure and good with no blemishes whatsoever.

Your beloved Dove is made up of all of your many (white) points of goodness.

The black background, in the image above, is the deep impurity of this world that surrounds you and tries to conceal your beloved Dove.

Hashem compares you to a Dove because a Dove is perfectly loyal to her mate and your essence is to be perfectly loyal to G-d.

Your beloved Dove is the part of you that never stops clinging to G-d no matter how far down you may fall.

Your beloved Dove refuses to ever be separated from Hashem for any reason.

Your beloved Dove is that part of you that never leaves G-d even when you are in a black mood or in a black environment or situation.

The beloved Dove of even the lowest person is permanently attached to Hashem.

The more darkness that surrounds a person, the more he is in a state of being hidden from Hashem and it is impossible for him to speak to Hashem.

It is precisely then that Hashem calls to your beloved Dove, your pure and holy good deeds and good intentions:

"Show Me your beauty, let me hear your sweet voice, you look so beautiful to me! Even now when you are surrounded by darkness you still look so very beautiful to Me in the aspect of "I am black and I'm beautiful." So reveal yourself to me (your Dove; your soul) and show Me (Hashem ) your everlasting beauty."

When Hashem Himself calls out to your beloved Dove: "Show me your beauty; let me hear your sweet voice" Hashem is inviting you to speak to him in prayer.

When you have harkened to Hashem's call, you will merit to recognize your beloved Dove within. Then you will be able to speak to G-d in simple, humble words of truth; you will be able to stand before your magnificent, all-powerful, all-loving Master and pour out your heart like water before Him.

From now on, whenever you see the color white, whether it's a white dove, or any type of bird or animal, or white clothing or even a fluffy white cloud - REMEMBER YOUR GOODNESS that is your eternal gift from G-d.

Please share this with your friends and family. It's my gift to you!

Gazing Skyward

person has to always be mindful that there is a goal and purpose to life. We have to strive to stay true to our goal, and to stay away from all the distractions that this world is chock-full of. The Torah calls this world a passageway. People don't waste a lot of time decorating a passageway, or fitting it out with all the latest luxuries. They know that the passageway is just leading them to the end point, the place which we should really all be focused on.

We all know that life is temporary, don't we? We all know that as the Baal Shem Tov said, there is nothing more definite than death. And yet, our Evil Inclinations are so powerful that they can so easily make us forget that we're just in transit, down in this world. There are cemeteries all round, and yet we all think death can't possibly happen to us.

That's the lie that the Evil Inclination tries to tell us all the time, so that we'll forget about our eternal goal and the whole reason for being down here in the first place. That's why the first thing a Jew should do when they wake up is to remember the World to Come.

When a person remembers their commitments, and all the things they have to get done that day, they will fly out of bed. When a person tells themselves they have no obligations to meet, nowhere pressing to go, nothing important to do, they will simply turn over, and go back to sleep.

One of the reasons that the Torah starts with the Hebrew letter bet, which spells out the world Bereishit (Genesis), is because bet has the numerical value of the number two. This is to hint to us that there are two worlds that are functioning on different but connected planes, at the same time. Most of what we see around us, and most of the interactions we experience in this lowly, physical world, are coming straight from the Evil Inclination, with the explicit goal of diverting us away from our true purpose.

If we really want to see what is going on in our lives, in this world, we have to keep taking the time to look up into Heaven, which is the world of truth. Only there, will we be able to see ourselves, and G-d, properly.

A very good way to do this is to do a spiritual accounting, or self-assessment, every single day, where we go through every aspect of our thought, speech, and action with a fine-tooth comb. These are the three areas where G-d is 'shrinking' Himself to interact with us, be with us, and to bring us closer to Him.

There I am, drinking a glass of milk, when G-d suddenly pops a thought in to my mind, and I wonder if I paid the money I owed the grocery store this month, where my wife buys a lot of the food we have in the house. I can dismiss the thought as a "random" occurrence, or I can take it seriously and investigate if G-d is telling me I've forgotten to pay off a debt that I should have gotten around to taking care of, already.

Another example: a colleague is telling me a story, a terrible story about a Jew who is desecrating the Shabbos. As I'm listening, G-d is inviting me to make a choice...Continue here...

Our Arch Enemy

Rabbi Nachman of Breslev said that Amalek, the arch enemy of the Jewish people and of G-d was a "philosopher" who doubted everything. The danger of philosophical speculation is not only that it  takes us away from the Torah's absolute truth, but that it weakens a person's capacity for certainty. It robs a person of the strength and clarity that come from simple, pure faith.

Secular "wisdom" claims to offer knowledge, power, and control, but its real effect on the inner life of the individual is quite the opposite. It usually leads to an increase in the level of doubt and confusion in a person's heart and mind. Because it trains a person to constantly question all truth - not just the truths of Divine wisdom, but even the "answers" of secular wisdom. It can even cause someone to doubt things that are completely clear and straightforward.

Gathering Souls Together

The Hebrew letters are holy. G-d used them as the building blocks of creation. The whole creation is composed of holy letters. Holy books and scrolls bring enormous numbers of letters together.

1. FIX YOUR GAZE ON THE HOLY LETTERS IN THE IMAGE ABOVE.

The gathering and joining together of the letters corresponds to the gathering of the the souls of Israel.

2. IMAGINE EACH HOLY LETTER AS A SOUL OF ISRAEL.

The gathering of the souls of Israel leads to the revelation of Torah teachings.

3. IMAGINE HOW THE ABOVE WORDS OF TORAH WERE WRITTEN BY OUR SOULS.

4. FROM THIS MOMENT ON, WHENEVER YOU SEE HEBREW LETTERS, WHERE EVER THEY MAY BE, YOU WILL FEEL A DEEP CONNECTION TO G-D, THE TORAH, AND TO ALL OF THE SOULS OF ISRAEL.

Spreading the written teachings of the Torah and righteous people leads to a tremendous revelation of spirituality and Truth. Faith and G-dliness are then revealed throughout the world, bringing more souls back to their Source.

5. IMAGINE HOW YOU MIGHT CONTRIBUTE TO SPREADING TRUTH, FAITH AND G-DLINESS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.

One who distributes holy books or gives charity for this purpose will attain true repentance.

5. IMAGINE YOUR HEAVENLY REWARD FOR THIS IN THIS WORLD AND THE NEXT WORLD.

Preparing for the Final Redemption

Rabbi Nosan of Breslev explains that there is an essential difference between our present exile and our previous exiles. In both the Egyptian and Babylonian exiles the Jewish people were told in advance how many years they would last. The Egyptian exile was to last for, at most, four hundred years; the Babylonian exile, for seventy years. Consequently, the redemption that followed each of those exiles was also for a limited time frame and followed by another exile.

However the long and bitter exile that we find ourselves in today is the final exile and G-d is getting ready to bring a final redemption that will be unlimited and eternal. We will see a boundless revelation and joy that none of the previous redemption experienced.

Backward is Forward

There is a big difference between a child who is fixated at a certain developmental stage and a child who has already mastered that stage and subsequently regresses back to it again.

Parents often become concerned when at about 8 months of age after having shown the beginning signs of being able to separate from mother, their baby exhibits "stranger anxiety" whenever anyone other than mother picks him up. Mommy might only be a foot away, but if uncle Mark picks up the baby he'll stiffen and start to cry. "What's going on here?," the parents say to themselves. Before now the baby would let anybody pick him up. There wasn't any crying when grandma, grandpa, or any of the uncles, aunts and cousins picked him up. The baby would give everybody a turn at lifting him and holding him.

The answer is that the baby has graduated to a more advanced level of development where he is able to...continue here...
